I have been watching a lot of Marquette Men's basketball this season. The games are producing some sweet victories for Marquette and are full of Energy Generating Behaviors (EGBs).
EGBs are Coach Shaka Smart's motto this season and his newest metric.
He's tracking EGBs in practices and games.
Megan Woolard, Managing editor of the Marquette Tribune offers this general explanation of EGBs.
(EGBs are) ... anything that helps the team generate energy or "lose themselves in the fight." It seems like these can be things such as high-fives, chest bumps, claps, floor slaps, basically any kind of encouraging physical contact....
Here's Coach Smart calling out an EGB in his first practice of the season.
I love EGBs! They say:
"You're awesome""You've got this""I've got your back""We are one team."
Connection vs. Burnout
EGBs demonstrate "connection," and connection is what humans need to feel safe, cope with stress, manage fear - and what we need to be awesome! Without connection, we are more apt to burnout when we experience stress.
Leaders,
Embrace EGBs and watch burnout decrease in your organization.
Follow these steps.
- Be an EGB role model. Start tracking your personal EGBs. Establish your baseline. Set a daily goal to meet. Keep track for 30 days.
- Give your leaders EGB homework. Introduce the EGB concept to your leadership team. Ask them to watch a team competition and report back the number of EGBs each team demonstrated as well as the outcome of the game.
- Define what EGBs look like for you. Below is the Marquette Men's basketball definition.
- Track and share your team's EGBs. Coach Smart tracks EGBs during the practices before a game and then through the game. At the beginning of each home game, he puts the pre-game EGB count on their giant video board at Fiserv Forum.
