What this picture is
This is a picture of my sister, Elizabeth, who looks to be about three-years-old. She is in a gymnasium and most likely there to watch one of her older brother's or sister's basketball games. She is walking steadily on the folded bleachers about five feet above the ground. Her delighted smile at the photographer is one she still wears easily today.
Why I saved this picture
For me, this picture captures the essence of Elizabeth as a young girl. She was full of movement, which brought her such glee, and that glee was contagious.
She loved to climb and explore. Family folklore includes a story that our mother likes to tell of being in the kitchen and hearing a pitter-patter coming from above, followed by a joyous giggle. To my mother's horror, she realized her toddler was on the roof of the house. After safely getting her down, my mom pieced together that my sister scooted up the attic stairs that usually were folded up into the ceiling. From there, she had climbed out the attic window onto the roof.
