Sometimes It Takes Two

What this picture is

This is my maternal grandmother and grandfather standing in front of their very first car. They're dressed up in their best clothes and holding each other's hand. My grandmother is wearing a corsage for the occasion. It's probably a gardenia. The gardenia become her favorite choice for a corsage after my grandfather bought her a gardenia corsage on one of their first dates. Perhaps they were getting ready to drive to Bellaire, Ohio for a family event. My grandmother grew up in Bellaire and most of her family would still have lived there at this time.

Why I saved this picture

I received this picture long after my grandmother passed away, but I knew exactly what is was when I saw it.

My grandmother had told me the story of her first car several times.

Shortly after she and my grandfather began dating, my grandmother told him that she didn't want him spending money on cabs when they went on dates. Instead, she insisted they take the bus, and he save the money for car.

So, that's what they did, and along the way they got married.

Eventually, they also saved enough money for a brick home in suburban D.C. where they raised my mother and uncle.

The photo shows me two people who were partners in life, affectionate with one another, hardworking and who made time to celebrate, to be happy, and to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Promote big goals and celebrations

Push your friends and family members to set stretch goals that require commitment and sacrifice. Watch them do the work and feel the goodness that only comes when you have worked long and hard for something. Then, encourage them to stop and celebrate their achievements.
